What are political dynasties?
Political dynasties are families with multiple members holding elected offices.
These families usually have two or more family members either elected to different positions at the same time, or alternatingly elected to the same position.
Why are there political dynasties?
Multiple family members get elected into office simply because of family name association.
In most cases, the family patriarch gets elected as a public official first. When his term ends, another family member, like the wife or any child, gets elected to the same office.
In most cases, the family patriarch gets elected as a public official first. When the official's term is about to end, another family member, like the wife or any child, runs for the same office.
As a result, the same public office becomes strongly associated with the family name, regardless of whether their governance benefitted their constituents.
Are political dynasties good or bad for the country?
Political dynasties ensure that power and control over a city, province, or even the entire country, remain within the family.
The interests of the family tend to overshadow the interests of the nation.
